The road of Buddha
It’s hard to beat the combination of challenging roads and myriad attractions that central and Northern Thailand offer – and on this journey we’ll mix ancient temples and remote villages with off-the-beaten-track dirt roads and misty mountain passes. This region has a reputation as one of the best places on the planet for motorbike touring and we have two weeks to see what it has to offer – from the famous Bridge Over the River Kwai to the hippie town of Pai, surrounded by a mellow mix of waterfalls and temples.

Itinerary
Transfer from airport to hotel.
Visit to Wat Trimit, known for the famous golden Buddha, a beautiful solid gold sculpture 3 meter high and and weighing 5 and a half tons. The city tour continues through an area known for its shops that offer gold jewelry.
Visit to Wat Pho, the temple of the reclining Buddha. Built in the 16th century, it is the largest and oldest temple with the most Pagodas: 95 in total.
Wat Pho was the first university in Thailand and offered courses such as literature, medicine, and massage.
Visit to the Grand Royal Palace and its 218.400 square meters surrounded by a wall built in 1782. The longest wall measures 1.900m. Within these walls is the government office and the King’s residence. This temple is the most important and most beautiful.
The day will end with a bus transfer to Amphawa.
Heading further away from the bustle of Bangkok, our route into the countryside passes some must-see attractions – including the floating market at Damnoen Saduak, Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, the Death Railway and the famous Bridge Over The River Kwai.
There’s a lot to take in in this fascinating area, so after an early start we’ll visit an elephant camp and the tragic memorial of the Hell Fire Pass Museum – or alternatively tackle a dirt road through the jungle that follows the line of a reservoir. Then we’ll take in the historic crossing point of the Three Pagodas Pass and visit the mysterious ruins of the Sunken Temple.
Get set for varied and challenging day as we journey into Northern Thailand. We’ll tackle a variety of roads – but one of them will be on foot, as we wander across the incredible Mon Bridge, the longest wooden bridge in Thailand. Afterwards, we’ll take dirt roads, a ferry and breathtaking mountain passes to reach our destination.
Today we’re following the path of the Ping River along leafy roads towards the beautiful region of Kamphaeng Phet, before continuing onwards towards the ancient temples of Sukhothai. We’ll arrive in time to tour the Historical Park and find out more about the city’s ancient civilisation.
A final visit to the temples of the historical Park, and then we’re off on the empty roads that cut through countryside and small villages on the way to the border city of Mae Sot. Once there, we’ll explore the city – from the hilltribes market to the border post marking the gateway to Myanmar.
With an early start, we’ll hit the smooth tarmac of the R105 on our way to Mae Sariang. Along the way, we’ll venture into the lands of displaced people at the Mae La Temporary Shelter, to find out more about local cultures and peoples. We’ll also visit the fairytale cave of Mae Usu.
Today we’ll tackle the region’s most famous stretch of road, the 1864 curves. The twists and turns of the road are renowned amongst motorbike riders as both challenging and scenic, offering a glimpse into incredible countryside – when you’re not concentrating on the road! Along the way, we’ll visit some of the hot springs that the area is famous for, along with a Karen Long Neck village, before arriving at the atmospheric ‘City of Three Mists’.
Today we’ll leave “City of Three Mists”, on another spectacular road speckled with places to visit (including the fascinating Coffin and Fish Caves, the Chinese village of Santichon and the nearby waterfalls). Our next stop is the hippie town of Pai, famous for its laid-back atmosphere.
Kick back on a rest day in Thailand’s most relaxed town, which is lost in beautiful countryside. There’s plenty to see around town – from hot springs and waterfalls to temples, via the WW2 Bridge. Alternatively, relax by the pool or take in the town’s burgeoning cafe scene.
We’re off again, this time on a ride through the countryside on local roads. We’ll pass the villages of Wat Chan and Sameong, before arriving in the remote village of Pong Khai for breathtaking mountain views. If you really want to test your skills, there’s also the option to tackle this stretch by dirt road, taking the scenic route for seven hours on a once-in-a-lifetime journey.
Back on highway and covering more ground today, we’ll make for the mountain of Doi Tung via the sprawling tea plantations of Doi Mae Salong and the Royal Factory Museum.
We’re in Golden Triangle Country, once the countryside hideout of opium lords. Our ride takes us along the border with Myanmar and to the Hall of Opium Museum, before following the Mekong river to Chiang Khong.
Departure day. Your day is free until the shuttle bus ride to Chiang Rai Airport and your onward flight.Ending the night in the beautiful location, visit the old local castle, walk on small streets and taste the delicious local dishes.
