Itinerary

Arrival in Munich. In the evening we reunite for our briefing, there we talk about the sequences of the journey. At night we will meet together for our welcome dinner in a typically Bavarian restaurant in the heart of Munich.

We take over our motorcycles in the morning, our Europe Tour 2020 can begin. On the first day we can get accustomed to the bikes and the different traffic in Europe with easy routes. We reach the Bodensee in Lindau (with 536km2 the third biggest lake in Central Europe). We shortly pass through Austria and Liechtenstein to enter Switzerland. Our hotel will be in the heart of Chur. Munich – Memmingen – Lindau – Feldkirch – Chur, 285 km.

From Chur we start our journey through the Swiss Alps. There are a few alpine passes on the program. The Oberalp, Furka and the Col de Forcolaz included are highlights in today’s stage, accompanied by a gorgeous alpine panorama. After Martigny we leave Switzerland and enter France. Chamonix is an alpine touristic town lying at the foot of the 4810 m high Mont Blanc, the “White Mountain”. Chur – Andermatt – Sierre – Martigny – Chamonix, 310 km.

The first rest day of the journey lets us relax in Chamonix. This little town with its alpine ambience invites to take a walk or to hang out in the pleasant cafés around the center. But before that, we will ride to the summit of the Aiguille du midi (3850msm) in a cabin and enjoy from there a breath-taking view overlooking the Mont Blanc and the valley below us. An incredible experience!

After this eventful day we leave Chamonix toward the South. The landscape changes noticeably, we leave the main Alpine Chain. On winding roads we’re headed towards Grenoble, the Mediterranean smell already in our noses. After a long day variedly passing passes, valleys and canyons, we arrive at our hotel in Saint Paul Trois Chateaux. Chamonix – Albertville – Grenoble – Montelimar – Saint Paul Trois Chateaux, 385 km.

Our stage for today brings us to Millau. Today a very special day awaits us, we’ll cross the national park “Los Cevennes”. On winding roads, we first go through the Ardeche canyon. The Ardeche river has carved deeply into the rock, offering beautiful views and opportunities to stop and take photos. After lunch there’s a second canyon on the scheduled, the Tarn canyon. Roads just as spectacular await us. In the evening, we arrive in Millau. Saint Paul Trois Chateaux – Vallon Pont d´ Arc – Florac – Millau, 270 km.

Today we can expect a driving day through a variety of landscapes. Gently curving hilly terrain, mountains and valleys. We have already arrived in Southern France. It smells of lavender and spices. Our destination today is Carcassonne. Carcassonne is a city in the Southern French region Languedoc. Especially famous is the medieval fortress “La Cité” with numerous watchtowers and a double wall. Millau – St. Afrique – Lacaune – Mazamet – Carcassonne, 250 km.

We can spend our second rest day in Carcassonne. Its landmark is the medieval fortress situated on a hill in the historical centre. This fortification, the so-called “Cité de Carcassonne” is a UNESCO world heritage since 1997. It’s unique in Europe due to its size and its conservation status. The Cité is inhabited to this day and is surrounded by a double masonry ring. Main buildings inside are a castle (Château comtal) and a church (Basilique Saint-Nazaire). Enough to do to spend our free day.

Today’s stage takes us to Andorra de Vella. Andorra is a little independent principality in the Pyrenees between France and Spain. It’s famous for their ski resorts and its status as a tax free zone, where duty-free shopping is possible. In the capital Andorra la Vella, boutiques and jewellery stores in the Avenue Meritxell as well as malls invite to go on a shopping spree. In the old quarter stands the Romanesque church Santa Coloma with its round bell tower. Coming from the South, we begin our journey through the Pyrenees here

hortly after Andorra de Vella we cross the border to Spain. The traffic slows down significantly when we leave the main road. We enter the mountains, we reach Vielha across the Áneu valley, then we pass through the Áran valley and over the Col de Peyresourde, a short trip to France. From Arreau to Anisa, back on the main road that leads us to Jaca. A long but eventful day is behind us when we pass this day in review with a cold beer in the evening. Andorra la Vella – Sort – Vielha – Arreau – Anisa – Jaca, 370 km.

Our second driving day through the Pyrenees waits for us. We’re passing the Pyrenean main ridge today, we cross borders between Spain and France. Arid mountain landscapes changes to green hillsides. Riding „up and down” the mountains, today we experience how impressive the different “faces” of the Pyrenees are. After a spectacular day we quickly arrive in Pamplona. This city is famous for the bull-runs taking place in July. During these popular multi-day festivities, bulls are getting spurred through the streets by courageous runners. Jaca – Formigal – Oloron St. Marie – Lumbier – Pamplona, 280 km.

A little shorter driving day awaits us. Our path leads us on winding roads to the Atlantic coast, where we arrive to San Sébastian. Impressive to arrive at the atlantic ocean, all of a sudden after driving through green hills. We’re going to spend our third rest day here. Pamplona – Tolosa – Zarautz – San Sébastian, 170 km.

After the last few days driving “up and down” across passes, we really deserve our third rest day. San Sébastian has a beautiful historical centre worth visiting or should we just stroll along the sea promenade?

After a relaxed day it’s time to say goodbye, we have reached the southern zenith of our journey. Our travel lead us on fast routes to Perigueux, famous for its goat cheese production and wine. The vineyards of the local winegrowers accompany us throughout the whole day. The historic city of Perigueux invites for a walk. San Sébastian – Biarritz – Langon – Bergerac – Perigueux, 390 km.

We leave Perigeux. Our route leads us on beautiful roads along the river Correze, passing Brive to Clemont Ferrand and Vichy. We are finishing our day in Chalon sur Saone. Perigeux – Brive – Clemont Ferrand – Vichy – Chalon sur Saone, 450 km.

Chalon sur Saone disappears in our rear-view mirror. Through Dole and Besancon, we reach Lure. There is the entrance to the Vogesen national park. Back in mountainous terrain and winding roads, we drive through the Col de la Schlucht to Colmar. In Breisach am Rhein we cross the border to Germany. We arrive at our hotel in the „Höllschlucht“ in the evening. Chalon sur Saone – Dole – Besancon – Geradmer – Colmar – Freiburg – Breitnau, 360 km

We climb our bikes for a last time. Our return trip to Munich goes through the eastern foothills of the Black Forest and the Lech valley. After more than two weeks and 4.000 eventful kilometres it’s the last stop for our BMWs. We return our motorcycles and during a pleasant farewell dinner we remember these last days. We bow out with an Hasta pronto!
