ITINERARY
Arrive in Dublin. In the afternoon we meet to receive our motorcycles and have our briefing, there we discuss the course of the trip. In the evening there is our traditional welcome dinner to get to know each other better.
Our first day of the trip begins! We quickly leave Dublin and on small stretches we can get used to the motorbikes and the different traffic in Ireland. We cross the Wicklow Mountains National Park. We make a short stop in Glendalough. It is known for its monastery settlement – one of the most famous on the island of Ireland. The most striking monument of the scattered monastery complexes is the 33 meter high round tower, which was erected around 1066 during the Viking invasions to protect the religious relics, books and chalices. We continue on small routes through Ireland’s “countryside” to our daily destination. Waterford is a seaport in the south east of Ireland and the oldest city in the country.
We leave Waterford early because we have a long day ahead of us. A varied route is waiting ahead of us. After passing Cork, the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland, we reach the Atlantic coast in Bantry. A first impression of this wild coastal landscape. On winding roads it goes back inland to Kenmare, after that there is only a short way to our daily destination Killarney.
Our first “rest day” on our trip. Killarney is a lively tourist town and is close to Lough Leane, the largest of the three lakes in Killarney National Park. Attractions include the Marian Cathedral and Ross Castle. But Killarney is also the starting point for driving on the well-known Panorama Road, the “Ring of Kerry”. If you feel like it, join our guide and enjoy breath-taking landscapes and views on this approx. 180 km long circular route. The Ring of Kerry is a panoramic coastal road around the Average Peninsula and leads past rugged and green stretches of coast and rural coastal towns.
On our way to Galway we have a little ferry crossing ahead of us. The ferry takes us across the Shannon River from Tarbert to Kilimer. On the way we stop at another highlight of Ireland, the “Cliffs of Moher” and enjoy the epic view of the Atlantic, which breaks against the steep cliffs.
The Cliffs of Moher are the most famous cliffs in Ireland. They are located on the south-west coast of the main Irish island in County Clare near the towns of Doolin and Liscannor. In many places, the cliffs protrude almost vertically from the Atlantic Ocean and extend for more than eight kilometres. At the south end, the Hag’s Head, they have a height of about 120 m., north of the O’Brien’s Tower they even reach 214 m. We soon reach the busy city of Galway. Here we stay again for 2 nights.
We spend our second rest day on our trip at the port city of Galway, the busy city centre with its winding streets invites you to explore.
There are shops and traditional pubs, where traditional Irish music is often played. In the nearby “Latin Quarter” parts of the medieval city walls have been preserved. Art galleries, boutiques, and cafés alternate with their natural stone facades in the alleys. A variety of cultural sites, including the Galway City Museum, are well worth a visit.
Today it’s a fantastic route along the Atlantic coast towards the north. We drive on
a part of the “Wild Atlantic way”, an absolute highlight of our tour. Narrow and winding streets with wonderful views accompany us all day long. Cultural sights invite us for a short stop.
Our day leads us through the green, hilly landscape of Ireland. Before we reach our daily destination, we visit the famous cliffs of Slieve League in the west of the Irish county of Donegal on the Atlantic Ocean. They are one of the main attractions of this region. The cliffs, which drop steeply into the sea, are one of the highest cliffs in Europe at 601 meters.
Today other highlights awaits us: the “Antrim Coast road” and a visit to the “Giant’s Causeway” before we leave the green island tomorrow. The Giant’s Causeway has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. It consists of around 40,000 uniformly shaped basalt columns, the age of which is around 60 million years. About half of the columns have a hexagonal cross-section, but there are also four, five, seven or eight-sided columns. The largest of the stone columns are twelve meters high. Then we reach Belfast, with its approximately 340,000 inhabitants. Belfast is the second largest city on the Irish island.
We leave Ireland today by ferry and reach the Scottish country. Our path leads us across Ayr and passing Glasgow, formerly the industrial centre of Scotland, now a cultural attraction. Leaving the big city behind us, different roads lead us to Aberfoyle. Welcome to Scotland!
Today’s stage takes us to Inverness. Our road leads us along Loch Linnhe, Loch Lochy and Loch Ness. We drive through the Trossachs National Park. An unforgettable first impression of the Scottish Highlands. In the city of Inverness we stay 2 nights. Starting point for our day trip tomorrow.
Our planned day trip has various highlights ready. Eilean Donan Castle, located on an island. Urquart Castle at Loch Ness. And of course we go in search of the sea monster “Nessy” that is said to be at home in Loch Ness. We also visit the associated information centre.
Another eventful day. Apart from riding motorcycles on beautiful routes, we come to the Scottish whiskey region. We visit the world-famous whiskey distillery Glenfiddich. During our visitor tour we learn a lot about the history and how this drink is made. Of course, a final tasting is included.
In the morning we drive a part of the “Whiskey Trail” in Scotland. Then further through the Grampian Mountains over the “Devil’s Elbow” pass, to Braemer and Perth. Great motorcycle routes are behind us. Then it goes comfortably to Edinburgh. Here we park our motorcycles for the last time. Our tour on our motorbikes ends here.
The last day of our trip, Edinburgh has a number of other attractions in addition to the castle and the famous Princess Street. Certainly, a day that ends too quickly. During our farewell dinner we review the last eventful weeks.
Farewell and flight back home.
