MACHU PICCHU AND THE UYUNI SALT FLATS

You are free to ride Chile, Peru and Bolivia within the convoy, following our leader and with the support vehicle right behind you. Or you can ride ahead of the convoy (you need a device able to read and navigate our .gpx trail) and enjoy this adventure at your own pace.
In both cases we ride the same road, we fuel up at the same stations, he eat in the same villages and we lodge in the same hotels.
If you get a flat the support vehicle will eventually catch up with you and fix it in few minutes.

Itinerary

The participants are met at Antofagasta airport (ANF)*, and taken by our launch to their hotel. After check-in follows the bike collection, signing of contracts, group briefing, organisation of baggage, and the welcome dinner offered by Exmo Tours. Departure will be on the following day.

The sea-breeze from the Pacific Ocean will accompany us across the Atacama Desert, which stretches as far as southern Peru. Temperatures can reach 35°C. and the intense sun will follow us along the bends that overlook the coast.

The sea-breeze from the Pacific Ocean will accompany us across the Atacama Desert, which stretches as far as southern Peru. Temperatures can reach 35°C. and the intense sun will follow us along the bends that overlook the coast.

The mountain chain of the Andes comes between us and Arequipa, the second most populous city in the world, famous for its eventful nightlife and the Bohemian-style architecture of its streets.

We continue our way along the coast of the Pacific Ocean between bends and inlets, passing through oases lived in by farmers and miners. Enveloped by the sea breeze and the spray of the infant waves on the rocks, we shall reach the city of Nazca, famous throughout the world for the 13,000 geoglyphs traced in the Nazca desert dating back to 300 BCE.

The interoceanic highway known as the PE30 is without a shadow of doubt one of the most beautiful roads in the world to travel on by motorbike and the group will discover part of it today. We shall leave the Nazca Desert behind us and begin a rapid ascent of the heights of the Peruvian plateau, discovering one of the most impressive stretches of asphalt on the planet. The series of bends will lead us across an endless variety of landscapes and altitudes of more than 15,748 feet above sea level.

The second part of the interoceanic PE30 will be every bit as exciting. The bends intensify, leading us to the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, the home of the Inca Empire and seat of the capital of this glorious dynasty: Cuzco. We shall follow the banks of the Urubamba and stop for two nights at the small town of that name, renowned for its proximity to the most famous Inca ruins in the world.

The group will be taken by our launch and then reach Machu Picchu on board a characteristic train with folk dancing. At a height of 7972 feet above sea level Machu Picchu is the third largest archaeological site in the world as well as being one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a Unesco World Heritage Site. The history guarded by its ruins make this day an unforgettable experience. On return, the group will be free to organise their own evening.

The Sacred Valley of the Incas and its splendour enfold the kilometres that we shall travel today along the Peruvian plateau. After a fascinating stop in picturesque Pucarà, we shall continue towards the city on the shores of Lake Titicaca, a navigable lake situated at highest altitude and the 18th largest lake in the world. A dinner awaits us among the streets of the city centre and we shall pass an enchanting night with a view over the lake.

We shall ride along the shores of Titicaca as far as the wonderful peninsula of Copacabana, from whose shores we shall cross the lake on board a wooden raft. After going through customs, we shall leave Peru and make our entry into Bolivia, continuing towards La Paz, considered to be the highest city in the world and also one of the Seven Wonder Cities of the planet.

The group will leave for an expedition heading into the Bolivian jungle. The drop of 1,600 metres and more consists of a series of perfectly asphalted hairpin bends and will include lunch in characteristic Coroico. On the way back the group will be put to the test on the unpaved surface of the notorious Camino de la Muerte (Death Road), famous for its 40 km stretch, open to transit and capable of generating  strong emotions to anyone riding it on a motorbike.

The Bolivian plateau will lead us as far as the Frailes mountain chain, characterised by breath-taking bends and multi-coloured rock walls. In the heart of the valley is hidden the ranch where we shall be guests for two nights. Dating back to 1557, this hacienda is the keeper of stories and legends, as well as the trappings of the period’s horsemanship, pre-Columbus ceramics and a collection of books that is unique in the world. For the occasion Motoaventura Tours will offer the group a dinner served on sixteenth-century tables and chairs.

Beyond the slopes of the legendary hill of Cerro Rico extends the largest silver mine of the XVIth and XVIIth centuries. The group will wear protective clothing and carry torches to venture inside the labyrinth of tunnels of the mina de plata. Workers in the industry will tell of the history and bring to life for the visitors the ritual of thanks to the Pachamama. An authentic and un-missable experience.

The fast curves enthusiasts are going to enjoy a day without equal! The road leading to Uyuni is completely without traffic and will allow the group to have 100% enjoyment of the recently asphalted bends of the Chichas canyon. Having landed on the salt flats of Uyuni we shall visit the sculpture dedicated to the Dakar rally and the Isla Incahuasi, travelling more than 150 km in the heart of the largest salt desert in the world. We shall stop for the night in a 4 star hotel built entirely from blocks of salt.

The group will tackle 250 km of hard-packed unpaved road that links Uyuni to the border with Chile. We shall cross a lunar landscape characterised by the chains of rocks of Alota and the salt flats of Chiguana. Once we have returned to Chile a long asphalted stretch awaits us that takes us to the heart of the Atacama Desert, considered to be the driest in the world. In the town of the same name we shall stop for two nights.

The group will enjoy a well-earned rest and be free to organise their own day visiting the characteristic craft shops of San Pedro de Atacama. In late afternoon we shall leave the hotel for a brief bike excursion that will take us inside the famous Valley of the Moon. We shall enter a tunnel carved out by erosion of the rock and await the sunset to admire the landscape of the desert from the top of a dune.

Once we have arrived at Antofagasta the members of the group will return their motorbikes and get ready for the farewell dinner offered by Exmo Tours.

The members of the group will be taken by our launch to Antofagasta (ANF) airport from where there are numerous flights to Santiago de Chile, a hub from which it will be possible to board their homeward flights.
